1. Scope & Commitment to Privacy

This Privacy Policy sets out how Truth and Dare Pty Ltd trading as Digital Readiness Lab (ABN 63 667 565 264) ("DRL", "we," "our" or "us") collects, holds, uses, and discloses personal information in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs).

Our objective is to safely conduct independent research and build verification frameworks designed to support children's thriving relationship with technology. Protection of the digital footprint and identity of families is central to our charter of objectivity and scientific rigor.

2. Personal Information We Collect

Depending on how you engage with us (as a research participant, partner school, academic collaborator, or general website user), we may collect:

  • Contact details (e.g. your name, email address, phone number, and postal address).
  • Professional credentials and institution names (for academic and commercial partners).
  • Research data (such as survey responses, focus group transcripts, and observational metrics provided by participating parents).
  • Technical and usage data (IP addresses, browser type, device indicators, and website interaction metrics).

3. Methods of Collection

We collect personal information through lawful and fair means. Wherever practicable, we collect information directly from you when you:

  • Complete questionnaires or submit inquiry forms on digitalreadinesslab.com.au.
  • Register to participate in the annual Digital Readiness Index or associated studies.
  • Sign up for industry reports, newsletters, or partner programs.
  • Correspond with us via email, phone, or direct consultation.

4. Purposes of Handling Information

DRL collects and handles personal information exclusively for purposes related to our core non-profit and research charters, including to:

  • Design, field, and analyze index measures (such as the Australian Digital Readiness Index).
  • Verify developmental baselines for technology consumption in minors under strict research controls.
  • Communicate key updates, report releases, and upcoming research cohorts.
  • Improve website utility, security, and administrative efficiency.

Our research activities are contingent on obtaining informed, written consent from participants. For any data collection involving minors, we mandate explicit, verifiable parental or guardian consent before any interaction occurs. You retain the right to withdraw consent at any stage of our studies without penalty.

6. Cookies & Digital Analytics

To enhance your online experience, our website uses cookies and general audience measurement pixels. These tools track generic browsing habits anonymously and help us prevent unauthorized submissions on our forms. You can disable cookies in your browser settings, though some functional attributes of the site may be restricted.

7. Third-Party Providers & Overseas Disclosures

We do not sell, rent, or lease personal identifiers to third parties. We utilize strictly vetted cloud providers, research hosts, and data storage services located within Australia. In the event that global academic collaboration requires international disclosure of research insights, all datasets are strictly de-identified and aggregated to prevent individual identification.

8. Data Security Frameworks

DRL employs industry-standard administrative, physical, and digital safeguards. This includes end-to-end encryption of research files, restricted access controls for staff members, and routine audit schedules. While we take all reasonable precautions, no transmission of information over the internet can be guaranteed as entirely secure.

9. Data Retention & Disposal

We retain personal data only for as long as necessary to fulfill the research objectives for which it was originally gathered, or to comply with statutory record-keeping regulations. When no longer required, data is permanently destroyed or irreversibly de-identified.

10. Access and Corrections

Under the APPs, you have the right to request access to the personal information we hold about you, or to request that we correct any inaccuracies. To submit an access or amendment request, please contact our Data Protection Officer using the details below. We will handle all requests within the legally required 30-day timeframe.

11. Children's Privacy

Protecting the vulnerability of children is our highest operational priority. Our Digital Readiness Index analyzes household structures but avoids gathering direct online tracking data from children under the age of 15 without rigorous verification of consent and adult supervision.

12. Complaints & Contact Details

If you have any questions or concern about our data processing, or believe we have breached the Australian Privacy Principles, you may register a formal complaint with us.

We will investigate and respond in writing with our findings. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may escalate your complaint to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC).

Our charter of objectivity

How we stay independent

Partners can fund the work. They do not shape the findings. Research is designed, fielded and analysed with the right expertise around it, with methods and funding disclosed. The Lab is separate from the products it will assess.

We publish what comes back, including when the answer isn't what anyone expected. Assessments are carried out by people who had no part in building what is being assessed.
